Everything You Need to Know About Hot Tub Water Testing

Hot tub water chemistry doesn’t have to be scary!

If you’ve just bought a hot tub, and you’re feeling panic-stricken by all the chemicals, test-kits and instructions you have to digest, then keep reading! In this article, we break down everything you need to know about hot tub water testing to get you well on your way to hot tub maintenance heaven!

Why Do I Need to Test My Hot Tub Water?

Testing your hot tub water allows you to see how balanced it is. Essentially, the balance is a measure of how acidic or basic (alkaline) your water is, on a scale of 0 to 14. It also enables your sanitizers to work more effectively.

The ideal range or pH level for your hot tub water is 7.2 to 7.6.  Any reading below 7.2 means your water is acidic, while a reading above 7.6 means it’s too alkaline. If the water balance is not kept in check, you could damage your equipment, or worse still, irritate your skin and/or eyes.

What About the Hot Tub Chemicals?

Your hot tub chemicals or sanitizers are the cleaning agents required to stop bacteria dead in its tracks. There are two kinds, chlorine and bromine – although bromine is a popular choice because it is odorless. In any case, both chemicals need to be tested to ensure they’re working at optimum levels, so your hot tub is as clean as the first day you bought it.

How Can I Test My Hot Tub Water?

Hot tub test strips are the simplest and most common way to check the balance and sanitization levels of your water. Simply dip the test strip into the center of the hot tub water and remove immediately. Next, hold the strip horizontally for 10 seconds and compare to the color swatches on the strip against the tub. We recommend testing at least once or twice a week, or ideally every time you use the hot tub.

Should I Get My Water Professionally Tested?

If regularly testing the water yourself is too time-consuming, get it professionally tested instead. Professional water tests are more accurate and thorough than home tests, and you get a complete picture of your hot tub’s overall health. Best of all, it allows you to fix potential problems before they arise, making it much easier to keep your water in balance.
